The seven-signal monitor checklist

Use this before opening a comparison table. If a product fails one critical signal, a longer feature list will not rescue it.

  1. Job

Name the primary device, software, games, room light, and weekly split between work and play.

  2. Size + distance

Measure desk depth and viewing distance before choosing 24, 27, 32, or 34-inch ultrawide.

  3. Resolution

Match pixel density to text needs and rendering load: 1080p, 1440p, 3440 × 1440, or 4K.

  4. Motion

Choose refresh rate with realistic frame rates; look for measured response and overshoot, not a 1ms badge.

  5. Panel behavior

Balance contrast, viewing angles, dark transitions, text rendering, brightness, and static-content risk.

  6. Connections

Verify every mode over the exact port: HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C video, power delivery, KVM, and console support.

  7. Physical fit

Check stand range, VESA mount, footprint, cable exits, laptop-lid load, and return path.

Two final questions

What is the most expensive failure? A GPU mismatch, unreadable text, an unsupported laptop connection, a weak stand, OLED anxiety, or a screen that does not fit the desk?

What evidence would change the decision? A current manual, an independent measurement, a compatibility report for your exact device, or the seller’s return terms?
